Registration underway for writers' retreat

 

Budding authors are invited to sharpen their pencils, stock up on notepads and sign up for the Summer 2013 Writers’ Retreat at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott.

The retreat will be held June 3 through 7. 

Pat Carr will serve as mentor.  She has published 16 books, including The Women in the Mirror, which won the Iowa Fiction Award, and Death of a Confederate Colonel, winner of both the PEN Southwest Fiction Award and John Estes Cooke Civil War Fiction Award.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s traveling exhibition, “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race,” will premiere on Thursday, April 25, at the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University. The exhibit will run through June 16.

“Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race” examines how the Nazi leadership, in collaboration with individuals in professions traditionally charged with healing and the public good, used science to help legitimize persecution, murder and, ultimately, genocide.

Talented young artists from the region will have an opportunity to see their work recognized as Arkansas State University Museum opens the exhibit, “Through a Child’s Eyes XXVII,” on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. with a presentation of awards in the museum lobby.

The Museum is located at 320 University Loop in the west wing of the Dean B. Ellis Library.  The artists, their families, teachers, and the public are invited to attend.  Admission is free.

The Women’s Council for St. Bernards Development Foundation will present the sixth annual Threads of Life Quilt and Fiber Arts Show on April 13 and 14 at St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 East Washington in Jonesboro.

Show hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 1 until 4 p.m. Sunday.  Admission is free.

This year’s guest quilters includes four Arkansas men:  Leonard Davis of Jonesboro, Eddie Landreth of Benton, Tom Hrezo of Cherokee Village and Dick Dupris of Mountain Home..  All of these men have pieced and quilted their own quilts.

WBC Theatre Dept. to close season with 'Fool's Paradise'

The Williams Baptist College theatre program will close the 2012-2013 season with the British farce Fool's Paradise by Peter Coke. The production is set for Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at WBC.

Johnny Cash Music Festival tickets go on sale Monday

 

Tickets go on sale Monday, April 1, for the 2013 Johnny Cash Music Festival.

This year’s concert, which will be held August 17 at the ASU Convocation Center, will star Vince Gill, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers and Joanne Cash Yates, who will join host Tommy Cash for the third annual event.

Proceeds from the concert will fund the restoration of “Man in Black’s” boyhood home in Dyess as well as support a scholarship fund established in the singer’s name.
