6 steps for healthy swimming

The Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer.  And that means trips to local rivers, lakes and swimming pools.

Before you hit the water for fun in the sun, the Arkansas Department of Health offers these steps to avoid recreational water illnesses (RWIs).

RWIs can cause a wide variety of problems, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections.

The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs like cryptosporidium, norovirus and E. coli.

Serenity House of Mid-South Health Systems invites you to take a walk for mental health.

The second annual “Mental Health Walk-a-Thon” will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Riverfront Park in Pocahontas.

The walk-a-thon is designed to raise mental health awareness and to educate the community on the types of treatment available.

They will also be accepting food donations to give to the BRAD Food Bank of Pocahontas.

In case of rain, the walk will be held at the Pocahontas Community Center.

For the fourth consecutive year, women who qualify can have screening mammograms performed on site at the St. Bernards Medical Group Health & Fitness Expo.

The St. Bernards Women’s Mobile Health Unit will be at the Expo today to provide mammograms for women who meet specific guidelines.

To qualify, a woman must meet the following criteria:

This year’s St. Bernards Medical Group Health & Fitness Expo will offer a variety of ideas for cooking healthy and eating right.

There will be different demonstrations going on in the Expo’s Healthy Cooking Kitchen, a facility assembled especially for Expo by Gilmore’s Custom Kitchens. Eight different demos will be held during the three-day event, with the featured cooks focusing on foods that are healthy, easy to prepare, kid-friendly and “better choices” that provide energy without excess calories.

Annual Health & Fitness Expo set for April 19-21

 

The sixth annual St. Bernards Medical Group Health and Fitness Expo will be held Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 21, at the ASU Convocation Center.

During the three-day event, area residents can take advantage of free health screenings and visit hundreds of booths featuring health and fitness services and products.  There will also be live demonstrations, educational programs, entertainment and free physicals for student athletes enrolled in Craighead County schools.
